How to design front elevation of house?
1. With a degree of unity the architectural elevation should always be harmonious. It makes the various elements and components of the elevation seem to be one, instead of parts. There are different ways to achieve unity: –
• One way is to repeat the element all through the elevation and create sort of a pattern
• The other way is by continuing a line visually or literally or maybe continuing a pattern, creating a grid-like structure, something that leads the observer’s eye along the elevation. Alignment can help that achieve easily.
2. With unity and simplicity sometimes a design gets boring, to resolve that it needs variety. At first, these concepts might seem conflicting but the design it’s called ‘variety within unity. So, how does that work?
• Unity can be maintained in geometry by using similar shapes for example rectangular or circular units throughout the elevation, but they can be varied in size or color.
.• Shapes and size can be varied and color can be kept the same of the elements or vice versa.
• Even the same base units or elements with the same size can be used with modifications per unit, like tilting, twisting, stretching, or folding it.
3. To guide the eye of the observer to the entrance ‘emphasis’ is important in the elevation design. There are many ways to achieve emphasis
• With the help of Contrast – It can be created by color texture or shape.
• By the help of Isolation – By isolating 1 element from a pattern the rest make it look like a focal point in a way.
• By placing something in the center – It makes an element its focal point. This is the reason that entrances since ancient times have been placed at the center.
• Big elements in size – They also attract the eye and are considered as a focal point. Besides, a distinctive element on a plain indistinctive background would do the same job.
4. In elevation designs proportions are very significant. They can make or break a design. Since Ancient Greek architectural culture rules have been formulated, like – Golden Ratio 1:1.618, Fibonacci sequence (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, …), Alberti Proportions, from The Ten Books on Architecture by Vitruvius, etc.
5. Another necessary factor that should be there in the design of an architectural elevation is ‘Balance’. It can be achieved by the most obvious way i.e. symmetry. It has been done like this since ancient times. However modern architects have new indirect methods.
• Asymmetrical balance is the new trend which can be achieved by changing size and color saturation or texture. For example, a big element with light color saturation may balance with a relatively smaller element with a more contrast color saturation.
Also, a miniature complex shape may balance with a bigger but much simpler shape.
• There is also a phenomenon known as “crystallographic balance” which distributes the load all over the facade of a composition. All elements are of equal weight, but not essentially identical.
6. Every visually pleasant architectural elevation has a rhythm. Like with unity, but with a different point of view, it can be achieved by repetition and pattern. A more familiar example of rhythm is the beat in music. In architecture, it works like rhythm by the elements. It can be induced in many ways
• Repetition
• Alternating Repetition
• Progressive Rhythm
• Flowing Rhythm
